Why a programmatic approach?

In 2006, ICCO implemented a programmatic approach, in the sense that we collaborate in a coalition of organizations and companies on a common objective. We tackle the issue of poverty or injustice effectively by creating added value and coherence.

Characteristics of the programmatic approach are:

• participants endorse a defined common objective

• the ownership of a program lies with the participants

• participants are complementary and combine expertise, experience and resources

• participants are convinced of the added value of collaboration

In a program coalition we are able to opt for different intervention strategies: financing, brokering and networking, lobbying and training. ICCO creates these program coalitions in its role as broker, networker and financier. Local partner organizations are the contractors of the programs.

The programmatic approach is being applied in all Regional Offices, most of the time in collaboration with other members of the ICCO Alliance. We systematically evaluate experiences in order to continuously assess the financial and administrative infrastructure and to improve the quality of the programs. ICCO learns how to increase the effectiveness of its results every day. Learning is integrated into our approach with partner organizations and in the process of monitoring and evaluation of our programs.
